REGENSBURG
On the first day you should make an extensive exploration of the city. Of course by walking. Take your time, experience the medieval city and enjoy it’s Mediterranean flair. Before noon you will explore the historical Old Town. One highlight follows another, fancy shops alternate with small cafes and restaurants which invite you to linger.
In the afternoon walk down to the Danube and cross the STONE BRIDGE. Enjoy the lovely view! Than enter the district “STADTAMHOF”, which was ruled by the Wittelsbach dynasty for centuries. You will find a lot of little shops and cafés there. When you walk along the Danube you’ll see small islands with extensive parkland and water meadows. For the locals, they are places to have a barbecue, sunbathe or simply relax. To end the afternoon properly in Bavarian style you should pay a visit to the famous SPITALGARTEN, one of the most beautiful beer gardens.
You will visit a former monastery from the 12th century, which is today the home of the princely family Thurn & Taxis. The buildings were given to the family in 1812 as compensation for the lost post monopoly. To this day it is inhabited by the princely family. Large parts of the castle are open to the public and serve as a backdrop for various cultural events such as the Schlossfestspiele.
Shopping in Regensburg does not mean to rush through the city and get hold of something fast. The city is almost an anti-stress oasis. The many small streets with their shops, cafés and restaurants leave nothing to be desired. Particularly in the summer months, life mostly takes place on the street and you can understand why Regensburg is the northernmost city in Italy. Here is only one thing: stroll and enjoy!
Oh God, another museum! But yes, you have to say in this case. The historical museum Regensburg is in every sense an unforgettable experience. On a visit you can learn a lot of fascinating things about the history of Regensburg and eastern Bavaria. The exhibits are presented in the wonderful setting of a former Franciscan monastery.
In the afternoon it is time to relax. Going on one of the Danube boats to Walhalla, is part of the standard program of a visit to Regensburg. Enjoy the peace on the river, the expanse of the Danube valley and look forward to seeing a Greek temple in the middle of the Bavarian hills. The dream of the Bavarian-Ludwig, built in marble, is worth a visit in any case.
